Title: Gravity of Direction

Materials: Bamboo, fabric, and metal

Year: 2025

This installation is made of ten small bamboo boats, locally called “Zhupai.” Each boat is covered with red cloth, with fine net fabric placed over it. The ten boats represent the ten directions east, south, west, north, the four directions in between, and above and below. Here they represent the movement and spread of culture. The boats also remind me of migration, memory, and communication, connecting personal experiences with collective history. Since the beginning of civilization, people have travelled along rivers, carrying their stories from one place to another. The boats are arranged in layers to create a feeling of movement and continuity, even though the installation itself remains still. The red color has both personal and cultural meaning for me. It is a color I see often in my everyday life in China—in streets, advertisements, and festivals. Over time, it has become a strong visual part of my surroundings. For me, red connects my personal life with the society around me. Each boat carries small fragments of everyday life and becomes part of the surrounding space. Together, the boats create a connection between the individual and the collective, reflecting how our lives, cultures, and memories are always changing and connected.

During an art residency in 2023, I visited Guilin where I saw this kind of boat for the very first time. People in the Guangxi and Guilin regions usually use these boats. After spending some time there and observing them throughout my visit, I found this object super interesting and decided to create some work around it.
